A small, heartfelt way to show up for grief.
The Grief Book Project is a community-based effort to make and give what we call grief books: pocket-sized books offering support to those experiencing loss. Our mission is to offer a simple way to show up for those in grief, while building a network of community makers who want to help.
Grief books are made to be handled and read, and to stand the test of time.
Grief book art is original, donated to the project by watercolorist Maggie Orion.
The text is adapted from How To Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies by Therese A. Rando, pp. 79-80. Bantam Books, 1991.
Each book is handmade from start to finish by volunteers, then given freely to someone experiencing grief.
We offer occasional workshops in Nevada County, California. Participants learn to bind their own grief book, and also make one to donate to local grief counselors and hospice workers. The next workshop will be at The Curious Forge on April 11, 2026.
